Landfill concerns aired at town hall meeting in Ryley – Ryley Village Council invited but does not attend; Reeve and landfill commission chair Bob Young present

Residents of Ryley and area aired concerns about the two giant landfills they say are impacting their environment at a meeting hosted by the Ryley Public Advisory Committee (RPAC) Wednesday evening last week.

The two waste collection centres are Clean Harbors, a Class 1 landfill that takes hazardous waste, and Beaver Municipal Solutions (BMS), a Class 2 regional landfill that takes general municipal waste and is overseen by a commission composed of representatives from the five local municipalities.

Clean Harbors is a private company and considered by many to have the highest environmental impact for the village due to its location within village boundaries, and the toxic substances it takes in. That includes a giant hill to the north full of toxic waste. Many people became alarmed when a giant windstorm blew the topsoil from that hill over the village last fall.
