Roller derby events at Holden Complex “loud and intense”

RollerDerby-Holden

A roller derby double header event took place at the Holden Complex last Saturday, with a rookie and co-ed bout sponsored by the High-way 14 Roller Derby Association.

This is the second annual event for this co-ed league, which has members in a junior program (ages 7-17) and adults aged 18 years and up. The league is made up of members from Tofield, Holden, Viking, Denwood and Wainwright.

The Second Annual Spring Fling held last weekend is expected to be an annual event. It is an invitational double header, featuring a rookie (under 10 games played) and a co-ed game.

“We have skaters registered, coming in from as far away as Grande Prairie. This will continue to grow every year,” said association President Barbara Lapointe, who is the primary organizer. “We celebrate our official first birthday on May 21. We currently have one travel team, with a goal of a house team in Wainwright and another in possibly Holden.”

The Highway 14 Roller Derby Association was founded by Lapointe and Sean Parnell on May 21, 2013. For more see the May 20/14 issue of the Tofield Mercury
