BHI working to make Beaver Hills moraine unique UNESCO biosphere reserve

The Beaver Hills Initiative (BHI), an organization composed of many adjacent jurisdictions including Beaver County, is working towards designating the Beaver Hills moraine a biosphere reserve under the “Man and the Biosphere” program sponsored by UNESCO.

An official launch took place on Sunday, Jan. 18 during the Beaver Hills Bioblitz Celebration held at the Strathcona Wilderness Centre.

The Beaver Hills is considered of special geographical significance due to its 1,600 sq. km. of moraine, plus an upland area of “knob and kettle” topography.

UNESCO stands for United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. A biosphere reserve designation from UNESCO would make the Beaver Hills a permanent area representing the world’s biodiversity. These biospheres are … for more see the Jan. 27/15 Mercury
