Loose Ends Column – by Carole Livingstone: Prairie Crocuses

I’m even more impatient for spring’s arrival since my son has been bragging about the “little green things” that are peeking through in the front garden at his home in B.C.

After I told him to be quiet or I’d prune him from our family tree (I’m not at my best when envious), I found myself thinking about prairie crocuses.

These grew close to the ground in little clusters of green leaves and pale, mauve-that-was- almost-blue blossoms that were velvety to the touch. I haven’t seen one for years but then I haven’t been traipsing across any pastures lately. They may still be out there.
