April 2011 Highlights in Tofield Mercury
The Tofield Museum and Nature Centre was the place to be for the Tofield Historical Society’s 50th birthday bash with many dignitaries and local residents, including Lt.-Gov. Donald Ethel and his wife, Linda.
May: A black bear is shot northeast of Ryley after a long winter’s hibernation looking for food by scratching the windows and doors of a house while its occupants were inside. The bear was believed to be about two years old and 200 lb.
The Ryley Junior Men’s team wins the Kevin Martin Junior Spiel, Recreation Division, at the Saville Centre in Edmonton over the Easter weekend. The team consists of Skip Brandyn Pope, Third Tim O’Shea, Second Reegan Dewart and Lead Bryce Pope. The Junior Curling Program in Ryley received $1,032 donation from raffle ticket sales with Olympic curling champion Kevin Martin making the donation to President of the Ryley Curling Club Dave Pope.
Angry affected parties told AUC officials at a process meeting in Tofield that they don’t want a giant powerline Atco project running through the centre of the county. Atco’s 500-kilovolt high voltage direct current transmission line is set to run between the Gibbons-Redwater area south to Brooks southeast of Calgary and was identified as critical infrastructure by the Alberta Electric System Operator and the provincial government.
