Valentine’s Day chan-ges in significance as couples age.

Once they’ve passed the starry-eyed young lovers stage, when they are so much in love that their heads hurt and not talking to each other a dozen times a day brings on heart palpitations (not the good kind), Feb. 14th is no longer the day that marks how deep their love is, sort of like a high water mark after a flood. It isn’t that special day when partners prove how much they love one another with expensive gifts.

In these early years, guys are expected to come through with the perfect gift for their perfect someone without having to think twice about it. The popular thought is, “if he really loves me, he’ll just know” what to buy. So if he makes the mistake of asking someone – or, god forbid, asking her! – then, well, he’s not The One after all. Time for him to hit the road while she hits the wine and the Rocky Road.
