The owner of a mailbox just off a rural highway wants to know how it got so badly mangled.

The box was welded to a 10 ft. metal pole that was put five feet into the ground and set in concrete, with the remaining five feet above ground. Whatever hit the box tore off the door, mangled the hinges and dented one side of it. Instead of facing east and west, it now faces north and south.

To say James Laverick was a little choked when he realized he no longer had an intact mailbox might be an understatement.

The retired man, who lives 10 miles north of Tofield off Highway 834, was told by an eyewitness that his mailbox had been hit by a wide load that morning.
