Quad rules for town and county clarified by RCMP

Tofield RCMP clarified an article on rules for driving all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) or quads, which appeared in the Mercury two weeks ago.

Sgt. Jim Warren states that quads are allowed on county roads, as long as helmets are used and the vehicles are insured and registered.

“They have to ride on the far right edge of the road and not travel more than 40 km/hour,” said Warren. However, he cautioned that ATVs are not allowed on highways numbered with two digits or less, which are provincial roadways.

That includes roads for example, such as Highway 14 and Highway 16 locally.

Plus, “you can’t drive in the ditch,” he said, along two-digit or less numbered roadways, calling “that’s a no-go zone.”
