Tofield RCMP warning of travelling contractors who may be home improvement scammers

The Tofield RCMP are warning the public to exercise due diligence when it comes to contractors who offer to do repairs as they move through the area.

“They surface at this time of year,” said Corp. Dave Brosinsky.

Companies can stop and offer to repair a roof, for instance, give an estimate and ask for funds up front.

“If they are soliciting work, you need to exercise caution,” said Brosinski.

“They could be a fly-by-night operation. They may do the work, but it may not be good quality, or they may only do part of it and leave, taking the money with them.”

He suggested checking to make sure the company has a business licence. “Most legitimate contractors won’t ask for money up front. They may ask for a small deposit.” said Brosinsky.
