Tofield students bring a “Toonie for Terry” during Terry Fox Run
Tofield School hosted its annual Terry Fox Run last Friday for students from Grades 5-12. Each student was asked to bring a “Toonie for Terry” and other members of the community were welcomed to join Tofield School participants in finding a cure for cancer.
Players from the senior high girls and boys volleyball teams helped out at “pit stops” along the walk to give words of encouragement to those involved in the event. The students participated on a route through the Town of Tofield to remember the Canadian hero Terry Fox and as part of their physical education program.
Fox was only 18 years of age when he found out that his right leg had to be amputated above the knee, but he wouldn’t let cancer stop him from achieving his dreams. He began his journey for fundraising across Canada to find a cure for the disease.
He started his “Marathon of Hope” in St. John’s, Nfld. but had to stop when the cancer spread to his lungs. Students across the country still continue Terry’s Marathon of Hope today. His dream still lives through young Canadians. The students followed the walk/run by watching a video about Terry Fox and his journey, then finished by eating healthy snacks.
