Remembrance: Tofield Legion member worked to bring home soldiers while stationed in Ottawa with the Canadian Army

Margaret Dickson was born in January, 1926 on a farm near Ryley, Alta. She was the sixth of nine children born to Frances (nee Hansen) and Charles Kallal.

Her parents had come to this area from Illinois in 1915. They eventually moved to a farm just east of Tofield where the family won a Master Farm Family award as Here-ford breeders. The Kallal Hereford Ranch still stands today with baby brother, Lawrence, living there.

“Mother had a lot to do with it,” said Margaret, “because of her capabilities. She was a hard worker.”

In 1944, she joined the army at the age of 18 and became a Canadian Women’s Army Corps (CWAC) Sergeant working with Group B Trades Bay and Director of Movement in Ottawa.
