2012: Taking a look at the past year’s news events

Police believe a series of thefts and break-ins, including stolen cars and a safe, are all connected to the same group of thieves who were travelling through the area over the holidays.

Deputy Mayor Conquest informed council that he has been re-elected as chair for the Tofield and Area Health Foundation. The community group formed to discuss recruitment of new doctors has become a sub-committee of the foundation.

Snow fell and temperatures dropped over the weekend so that public works employees in Tofield were busy laying down sand on the streets filled with ice and snow. The cold weather didn’t prevent the buses from running locally.
Temperatures hovered around the -25 to -35 C degree mark in the region.

Tofield hosts its first ever Female Bantam hockey tournament. Four teams competed in this event including the Tofield Titans, Lloydminster Blazers, Fairview Cruisers, and Winfield Ducks.

Holden resident Adelle Story wins $100,000 on the Extra lottery game. Her good fortune could also be described as a late Christmas gift. Story purchased her winning Lotto Max ticket with the extra entered for the Dec. 30th draw at the Holden Esso.

It may have been the first Tofield Bull Bash last year, but the event was so successful even the cowboys rated it number one. The inaugural bash placed as the top event in Canada as voted on by the top bullriders of the Elite Professional Bullriders (EPB).

At the P.C. nomination to replace outgoing former premier Ed Stelmach in Fort Saskatchewan-Vegreville, Strathcona County Councillor Jacquie Fenske was victorious Jan. 25 beating Tofield Mayor Nabil Chehayeb, former Beaver County councillor Gene Hrabec, Vegreville Councillor Adam Kozakiewicz and former Fort Saskatchewan mayor Jim Sheasgreen.

Tofield Titan Peewee ‘A’ hockey team takes gold at an eight-team tournament in Bashaw, coming out undefeated after playing three games in their round robin pool.

Christian Duchscher, 6, presents $880 to the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation, funds raised at a BBQ last summer. He raised more funds by having his hair shaved Feb. 3 at the 10th Annual Hair Massacure at West Edmonton Mall.
