Regional landfill needs to give more back to communities, says concerned citizens

Landfill-BMS

A group of concerned Ryley citizens say they want more from Beaver Municipal Solutions (BMS) than what is now being given to compensate for the negatives caused by the regional landfill to the northeast of the village.

And they want the five municipalities involved in running BMS through its locally appointed board to also benefit more from the long-standing relationship.

As a non-profit organization, BMS does not need to make a profit from every service it offers local municipalities, say the group. When local transit sites in Bruce and Holden were closed a decade ago, the reason given was that they weren’t profitable enough.

But the concerned citizens group says that the landfill was founded as a service organization, not for profit. BMS has a large surplus now, funds the group said should be funnelled back into the local communities of Tofield, Ryley, Holden, and Viking, as well as Beaver County.
