Roller Derby Revival in Beaver County
Roller derby is a sport which has experienced a dramatic boom and bust cycle since its beginning. Many have never heard of it, and most have never played, but, a recent revival is taking place, and communities along Highway 14, from Tofield to Wainwright, are a part of that revival.
In fact, you may have seen the Highway 14 Roller Derby Association play at the Vikings in the Streets Festival joust last week.
The Highway 14 Roller Derby Association was founded in 2013 by Barbara Lapointe and Sean Parnell and currently sits at roughly 25 members and two teams, the Steamrollers and the Speedbumps, a junior team.
Co-founder and President Lapointe said, “the biggest challenge in creating this association was creating awareness.”
Though the Highway 14 Roller Derby Association is quite new to this particular area, and quite a sensation as the sport grows more popular within communities along Highway 14, this phenomenon is also happening on a larger scale.
