Local AHS team strives for barrier-free access in Tofield

BarrierFree-AHSTeam

Two Alberta Health Services employees have been working to make Tofield a barrier-free community, enabling everyone to access different buildings and venues.

The barrier free design is part of the building code for new and renovated buildings, but there are buildings and facilities that can be fixed up so everyone can participate in the community and its activities, such as stores, banks, libraries and restaurants.

That is the goal for Jillian Heiberg and Alina Schneider, both occupational therapists, who work out of Tofield Community Health.

“We thought it would be great to do something, to create awareness,” said Schneider.

“It’s about being barrier-free,” added Heiberg, to allow access for walkers, wheelchairs, parents with children in strollers, and other access issues.
