Residents oppose closing Ryley’s main entrance as way to end train whistles
Nobody spoke in favour of closing the main entrance into Ryley, one of the topics of discussion at a town hall meeting Feb. 3.
The closure of the central entrance-way into Ryley off Highway 14 would end the need to build a fence along Railway Avenue, one of the criteria the village would have to go through in order to shut down the train whistles as they pass through.
Mayor Brian Donovan explained that some people had approached him about ending the whistles, and closing the central entrance might help do that.
Village CAO Janet Winsnes said the village also pays gate fees of $3,600 annually to the railroad.
