Tofield family walks for Williams Syndrome

On Saturday, June 9 Tofield resident Sarah McLaughlin and her family headed to Rundle Park in Edmonton to participate in the The Walk for the CAWS – The Happiest Walk in Canada.

The McLaughlins were supporting their youngest family member – Abby.

“Abby was just past her second birthday when we received the diagnosis, and we knew shortly after that there were some health concerns,” McLaughlin explained. “As she got older, she was not reaching her milestones.”

A move resulted in changing pediatricians and on their first visit they were asked if Abby had ever been tested for Williams Syndrome. According to McLaughlin, a FISH blood test confirmed the doubts. “It’s a DNA diagnostic test that detects the elastin deletion on Chromosome 7,” McLaughlin said.
