Tofield RCMP officer charged with assault during off-duty hours
A 12-year-old veteran with the RCMP, and a member of the Tofield detachment, Cst. Dane McCarty has been charged following a police investigation, and had his first appearance in Vegreville Court on Monday, Nov. 5.
The Tofield RCMP responded to a 911 call made from home on Monday, Oct. 29.
Both the homeowner and a resident of the home allege that Cst. McCarty forcefully entered the home and assaulted them both.
The homeowner and resident successfully restrained him and convinced him to leave.
However, according to a statement released by the Alberta RCMP, Cst. McCarty entered the home a second time and continued his assault on both alleged victims.
Once more, Cst. McCarty was restrained and convinced to leave. Immediately thereafter, the Tofield RCMP members took Cst. McCarty into custody.
Speaking to the incident, Beaver County councillor Kevin Smook said, “When I heard about the local RCMP incident in town, it came as a surprise to me, these alleged charges, because Tofield is a peaceful community.” Smook who has been an integral part of the community for 25 years added, “I have lived here for more than two decades, and people mostly get along with one another. I guess we have to wait and see what happened.”
Cst. McCarty was not on duty at the time. Charges include break- and-enter assault, assault, and two counts of mischief. . . .
