BRSD does not take student transportation lightly

Winter has been harsh this year, and continues to disrupt normal life, at least for elementary and secondary students as bus routes have been cancelled a few times this month.

Battle River School Division (BRSD) covers 6,300 square kilometres and has 81 bus routes; and with school buses travelling over 12,870 km every day, it hasn’t been easy for the 3,958 students who avail of the bus services.

“We do not take student transportation lightly,” said Diane Hutchinson, BRSD Director of Communications. “We work hard to ensure that we can provide a safe and secure journey for students to start and end their school day. We live in a part of the world where snow and cold weather is a yearly reality; we don’t plan for ‘snow days’ but we are aware that there will likely be a few days each winter when school buses do not run.”

Even when buses are cancelled, however, schools remain open and staff are ready to provide instruction, Hutchinson added. BRSD takes recourse to Administrative Procedure (AP) 131, which guides decision-making for bus route cancellations. . . . contd.
