Tofield School raises tobacco awareness through display
The Tofield School Grade 9 Health classes wanted to spread substance usage awareness throughout the school in the month of March.
In order to accomplish their goal, they created a display that explained the harmful side effects of – tobacco, e-cigarettes, hookah pipes, vaping, and marijuana.
“The display was arranged by the office doors on Monday, March 18, and was put up there because the classroom would limit the amount of exposure to the other students,” said Ann Wandler, Health and Mathematics teacher. “We felt that it was a good message that should be spread throughout the Tofield School community.”
Wandler noted that the official name of the display is ‘Teenagers and Tobacco.’
This was designed to specifically target younger audiences because they can be more susceptible to peer pressure that could lead to addiction.
It also, encouraged students and staff to question how tobacco can affect the lungs and other vital organs.
“A majority of families have someone who once utilized or still uses tobacco,” said Grade 9 student Katalin Hemperger. “The shoes by the office are part of the display, they represent 100 people who have lost their lives to tobacco-related illnesses in Canada.”
