New community group hosts first annual community day of service

More than 30 people, from six years to senior citizens, gathered together to help out with various community projects on Saturday, July 6.

“This was our first annual community day of service as part of the new community group, Tofield Interfaith and Community Council,” said Dan Hillyer, one of the members and Tofield Branch President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. “We had to postpone our original plan of hosting it on June 22 because of rain, but this worked out well too; however, we had to shelve some projects.”

Hillyer added that among the many things they worked on were “raised gardens for the Food Bank.”

“We built some raised gardens for the Food Bank, but the gardens are also for community use,” Hillyer explained. “More than a dozen picnic tables were repaired and painted, and the younger groups helped in painting the wooden bollards around the arena.”

Children and younger volunteers were assigned to paint the wooden bollards around the Arena.

Speaking about this new community group, one of the other members, Rev. Adam Hall said, “Our work is designed to be an opportunity to gather together as members of the community, regardless of any difference in religion, faith, tradition, biases or practices, and learn from one another; to learn about one another; share in each other’s challenges and joys; to grow in our faith together; and to work together to better our community.”

Fairly new, the group is yet to form a ‘mission statement,’ but it’s clear where they stand now.

“We seek to affirm each other’s faith, and to work together in an inclusive environment . . . contd.
