Waking the talk with recycled accessories

With a shawl made from 10,000 pop can tabs, and a purse and skirt crocheted from VHS tapes, Anne Ruzicka, one of the board directors of the Recycling Council of Alberta, but better known as the face of Beaver Municipal Solutions (BMS) in the community, embodied her creativity and out-of-the-box thinking at the themed Recycling Red Carpet gala.

“It’s important to think differently and get people on board if we are to help them understand the importance of recycling,” Ruzicka said.

Her purse and skirt crocheted by her sister Marilyn Kroetch were talk of the evening and someone was even willing to buy her purse.

“In Oct. 2016 we launched the Upcycle Challenge during Waste Reduction Week in Canada,” Ruzicka said. “An initiative of BMS’s Public Advisory Committee (PAC), a request was later made to change the focus into a business development challenge, which could potentially provide economic benefit to the community.” . . . contd.
