My reminder of what is important
Our family spent a lot of time this Christmas thinking about my Dad and attending to his needs. Nothing unites a family like a sick family member, and despite how terrible his situation was, it brought together the people who love him at the exact time of year where that seems just a little bit more important than usual.
For us this Christmas season, the illness of my father and the absence of my mother both united our family and also reminded us of how the death of a single family member changes things forever.
You see, my Dad would never have gotten this sick if my Mom was still alive. Moms are like that. I am sure most of us have, or have had, a Mom like mine. She organized everything. She attended to everyone’s needs. She did all the little things that nobody even realized fully until she was no longer there to do them, and the whole time in complete anonymity.
Mom would have sent Dad to the doctor’s office months ago. But Mom has been gone 10 years now. . . . contd.
