Tofield Legion continues its Rabbie Burns tradition

What started as a tribute to the Scottish poet and lyricist Robert Burns or Rabbie Burns, continues to be a social evening for the Tofield and area community, hosted by the Tofield Legion.

On Saturday, Jan. 25, the Legion had the traditional Scottish fare of haggis, with the evening commencing with the playing of the bagpipes and Legion President Barbara Ferguson carrying in the haggis.

“We’ve held this annual event for a very long time, and as long as we can get a bagpiper, we would like to host it,” said Secretary Bonnie Ferguson. “Even though there wasn’t a great turnout, all attendees enjoyed the supper. Besides haggis, there was roast beef, veggies, mashed potatoes, gravy, and other condiments that guests could enjoy. We also had coffee and dessert.”

Speaking to the low turnout, Ferguson said that often the community is under the impression that the Tofield Legion and associated events are members-only.

“We aren’t a closed-club at all compared to some of the other Legion branches where they can even consider doing this,” Ferguson added. “We haven’t had a members-only event in a long . . . contd.
