Tofield resident gives birth during COVID-19 pandemic lockdown

In the midst of chaos there’s always hope, and that’s what the Diederich family found out when Isla was born to Bailey and Tim Diederich of Tofield on Tuesday, March 31.

As first time parents they are thrilled that the birth was seamless despite the difficult and bizarre environment as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“This is a scary time right now and as my due date came and went, we started to become more and more concerned as the news we read kept getting worse,” Bailey Diederich said. “She was due on March 23 and she ended up being a week late. As each day went by, more and more social distancing was being encouraged; hospital rules regarding support people and visitors were changing and everyday felt like you weren’t sure what the news was going to be next! We struggled with the thought of not being allowed any visitors at the hospital and only being allowed one-support person, but the scariest part was worrying if they were going to completely eliminate support people and that Tim, Isla’s dad would miss everything.”

Diederich recalled that while they were on their honeymoon to Banff, they came up with the name ‘Isla’ and wanted to name their child as such if she were a daughter.
