EDITORIAL: National media will be an uphill battle for O’Toole as it was for Scheer

Immediately after being elected as the new leader of the federal Conservative Party of Canada, Erin O’Toole gave a better speech than I had heard former leader Andrew Scheer give in his three previous years at the helm. He spoke of uniting the party, fighting against the divisive Liberal government, and being inclusive to all Canadians. Direct, articulate, well-spoken.

O’Toole was elected leader of the Conservatives late Sunday evening. The victory was a bit of an upset over favourite Peter MacKay, but maybe the biggest surprise was how well Leslyn Lewis did finishing third. The first visible minority woman to run for party leadership, and a relative newcomer to politics, the Jamaican born lawyer’s only downfall was her poor support in Quebec largely because she is just learning to speak French. . . . contd.
