Former Tofield graduate Michel Blades contributes to National Award
Former Tofield graduate, Michel Blades of Elk Island Public Schools played her part in Kristian Basaraba’s 2020 Governor General’s History Award for Excellence in Teaching. Blades, who is now an educator in Elk Island Child and Youth Ranch in Lamont County works with students there raising awareness about Indigenous land and culture.
Basaraba of Salisbury Composite High School out of Sherwood Park brought together his love for skateboard art and combined it with a history lesson on Indigenous culture and colonialism in an effort to raise awareness about reconciliation.
Students worked with Blades and community leader and professional skateboarder Joe Buffalo to explore Indigenous history and their understanding of the effects of government policies, legislation, and practices on Indigenous cultures and peoples. . . . contd.
