Vertical Roots, a labour of love

Tofield couple, Becky and Mike Newhook started Vertical Roots as a test farm in the back of a garage during COVID-19 lockdown.

Speaking to their endeavour, Becky said, “My husband Mike is the master grower and started working with hydroponics greens using NFT and Bucket Systems.”

They grew Romaine lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers and green peppers.

“It was a resounding success, and currently based on our 500 square foot of vertical growing space, we can produce over 450 heads of lettuce a week,” she explained. “Different vegetables require different nutrients and light, so leafy greens is currently what we’re focusing on based on the system we have. We hope to branch out into tomatoes and cucumbers in the future.” . . . contd.
