Canada Post Update for Readers: No Strike Action Yet

Negotiations between Canada Post and the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) continue, with no strike action filed yet, as was feared Sunday.

Both sides have said that the negotiations to date have not been as productive as they’d hoped.

Any risk of a strike or lockout requires 72 hours of notice, and CUPW has warned that a strike notice could be issued at any time if talks break down.

Canada Post has offered annual wage increases of 11.5 per cent over four years. Last Wednesday the union said the offer “is far from what we are demanding and deserve.”

Unless strike action is called before Monday at 5 p.m., delivery of your local newspaper should once again be fulfilled as normal for the November 13 edition.

In the event of a labour disruption, and based on our talks with Canada Post employees, Caribou Publishing is hopeful that the majority of readers would still receive papers in their mailboxes.

Rural readers will be instructed of pickup locations where they can grab a paper in the event there is no other way to access their mail. We will also offer our e-editions online at no charge for any week(s) affected by Canada Post delivery interruption.
