Quilts and funds exchanged in good causes – Guild gives tactile quilts to long-term care residents

Quilts-Guild — It was a lovely time at the Tofield Health Centre when members of the Tofield Country Quilters Guild delivered 11 tactile quilts for Long-Term Care residents to use and enjoy. In their turn, the residents raised $421 that the guild used to make blankets for the “Bags of Hope” project, which gives personal care and other items to children apprehended from their homes by Children’s Services. The guild is shown displaying some of the tactile quilts they made to give to the residents.

An lovely exchange took place last Friday between quilters from the Tofield Country Quilters Guild and Long-Term Care residents at the Tofield Health Centre.

Several members came to donate 11 tactile quilts to the residents at long-term care on behalf of the guild. Each square on a tactile quilt is different to the touch and has a particular texture that the person using the quilt can identify by touch and feel.

A particular square could feel soft and fuzzy to the touch, or rougher, as in corduroy material, for example. Guild President Natalie Warkentin said the differences in touch and feel can help to awaken the senses, much like the smell of food arouses a sense of hunger.
