Sick Calls: “Loose Ends” Column by Carole Livingstone
Every day we greet people with a friendly “How are you?”
It’s the equivalent to saying, “Hello,” and we don’t expect to hear much more than “I’m fine, thank you,” or “Can’t complain.” “Still breathing.” “As well as can be expected.” “I’m good.” “Every day still above ground is a good one.”
I doubt that anyone wants us to go into detail about any health related problems or concerns that we’re experiencing and it isn’t often that we want details from others.
But sometimes that simple little query puts us on the receiving end of the long version, a litany of aches and pains, the frailties of others that, frankly, we’d rather not hear about.
