Bookmobile’s Summer Reading Games

For over 35 years the Strathcona County Library Bookmobile has played an active part in many rural communities. It runs the ‘Summer Reading Games,’ a summer reading program for kids from Pre-School and Kindergarten up to Grade 12.

“My favourite part about running this program is being able to see the happiness on kids’ faces when they receive a prize for reading,” said Linda Galbraith, one of the mobile library specialists at the Hastings Lake Community Hall on Tuesday, Aug. 21.

This year the program started on June 29 and will conclude on Aug. 26. The bookmobile is a mobile library that provides books, movies, and magazines for all ages to enjoy every week.

“Each summer the theme for the program changes,” Galbraith explained. “This year the theme is ‘Build a Better World.’”

The teens, who are usually from grades 5 to 12, are given a task to do something that makes the world better. While explaining the theme this year, Galbraith said that one of her favourite examples was when one of the participants painted on the storm drains.
