Alberta SPCA seize horses and pigs, owners in disbelief
What began as an investigation by the Alberta Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) just before Christmas last year on the Hanlin Miniature Farm off Hwy. 14, eventually resulted in the seizure of all farm animals on Friday, Feb. 15, that farm owners, Peter and Linda Spahr have grown to love and care for over more than a decade.
On Friday, Feb. 1, the SPCA made their first seizure of seven horses, ordering Linda to put down two more while they were there.
“We’ve been monitoring the animals since our first visit, and advising the animal owners what needed to be done, but there had been no improvement during our subsequent visits and the animals were in distress,” said SPCA Communications Manager Dan Kobe. “When we visited on Feb. 1 there were several dead animals on the property, and we seized seven that day.” . . .
. . . One of the owners, Linda was shocked how everything went down on Friday.
“Peter and I had gone to buy hay that morning and we didn’t know they would be coming that day, otherwise we wouldn’t have left. But they were there and rounding the horses, and when Peter started creating commotion, one of the officers, Emma Fillion pushed him and he fell,” Linda narrated. . . . contd.
