Premier calls provincial election for April 23

Premier Alison Redford asked Lt.-Gov. Donald Ethell to drop the writ Monday morning, triggering the province’s 28th general election April 23.

The campaign will be four short weeks, and is just six months after Redford took over the reins from former premier Ed Stelmach, who vacates the MLA’s seat in Fort Saskatchewan-Vegreville as of the election call. Stelmach now officially retires as the local MLA for this area, having served since first elected in 1993.

County to fund Carena in Viking, $5,000 to playground fundraiser

Beaver County has agreed to two funding requests that will benefit the Carena in Viking and the C.W. Sears playground project.

The Carena will receive funding for four years up to and including 2012. That includes $47,000 from the 2009 budget (from reserves), $50,000 from the 2010 budget (from reserves), $50,000 from the 2011 budget (from reserves), and $50,000 from the 2012 interim budget (from tax levy).

Police deal with many accidents, disturbances and scam-related incidents over 10-day period

On March 12, a break and enter was reported at a farm residence just south of Holden. The culprit or culprits broke a hinge on a door to gain access but didn’t appear to have stolen anything inside, said Sgt. Jim Warren.

On March 12, a woman reported a hit and run to her vehicle on main street in front of Tilly’s Restaurant in Tofield. “It appears the offending vehicle backed up and scraped the vehicle causing bumper and tail light damage,” said Warren.

Little girl and mother part of awareness campaign on “The Today Show” for rare, often misdiagnosed disease affecting young children

News of a child’s serious illness can cause any parent to feel a sense of despair and helplessness. But one mother is turning that diagnosis into a mission to raise awareness of a rare disease. She says too many children are going misdiagnosed and funding must be raised to find a cure.

“Charlie was born on April 21st, 2009 at a very healthy 9 lb. 6 oz., she was a wonderful baby,” said mom Amber Trenaman. The Trenaman family lives in the Tofield area and runs a locally owned and operated bu-siness, T3 Water Hauling Ltd., just off Wye Road and R.R. 202.
