Decision not to allow rezoning for new Carey subdivision met with cheers by those opposed – including nearby firing range

A decision not to proceed with a land use bylaw amendment paving the way for a subdivision in the county’s west end was met with cheers after a county public hearing Dec. 19. In the end council agreed with administration’s recommendation to defeat second reading of Bylaw 11-991.

The subdivision application at NW 21-50-20-W4M was made by Dr. Stephen Carey of Natural Holdings Ltd. in Vancouver, whose previous Carey Ridge Estates development was a source of controversy for many in the area.

The Dec. 19 hearing involved an application to rezone 155 acres from agricultural district to country residential.

The only person speaking in favour was Dr. Carey, while several residents came forward with concerns over wildlife and the proposal’s proximity to the local gun range.
