Tofield School Musical entertains the community

The Tofield Alliance Church was crowded mid-last week as students of Tofield School enacted Tom Kelly’s ‘Phantom of the Op’ry’ directed by staff member Melissa Korpan, with music by Gerald Castle, and lyrics by Michael C. Vigilant.

Assisting Korpan as the stage manager was high school student Kylie Kuflay.

“It was a unique experience for me, and I learnt a lot,” Kuflay said. “My job was to organize handheld props behind each flat.”

Kuflay elaborated that these props were often key in jokes and the storyline surrounding the Op’ry house.

“If the props were not in the right place the scene would not run as smoothly, and was a big task that required a lot of focus, however by being part of such a big event at Tofield School, I had an exhilarating time.”

The Phantom dances with his pink unicorn while Christine Swansong and Fairleigh Good share a heartfelt moment nearby.

When it comes to play adaptations and what works best for students on stage, Korpan always has the insight as the community has seen through the years.

“People will often ask me how I look for scripts, and I usually tell them that I read many scripts in late summer before selecting ‘the script’ for that school year’s musical,” Korpan said. “So, when I first read this script three years ago . . . contd.
