BRSD Superintendent says no to new K-6 curriculum upon detailed review

In a new turn of events, BRSD will not be introducing the new K-6 curriculum this fall as decided earlier by the school division.

“School divisions do always expect to be involved in piloting any changes to curriculum, as that is an opportunity to review its strengths and provide feedback,” said Superintendent Rita Marler. “In our first glance at the overview of the curriculum we were particularly pleased to see the emphasis on literacy and numeracy, both of which are extremely important to us.

“However, we have now made the decision not to be involved in piloting any aspect of the curriculum next year. It is based on our own more detailed review, recognition of the challenges that students and staff have experienced this year, and, in part, due to the feedback of both teachers and parents who are expressing concern that we have made that decision.”

Marler added that the decision was reached upon “careful consideration”. . . . contd.
