Tofield Legion turns 91
The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 91 turned 91 last month amidst strict COVID-19 restrictions.
“COVID-19 restrictions continue to wreak havoc on Tofield Legion’s attempt to celebrate a milestone,” said President Barb Ferguson. “Provincial health guidelines torpedoed our 90th anniversary celebrations last year and threaten our plans for this spring.
“The mandate of the Royal Canadian Legion is to serve veterans and their dependents, promote Remembrance, and to serve the community. The yearly Remembrance Day service is planned by the Branch, and members lead the parade with the RCMP every July 1st. We maintain two monuments; the Main Street Cenotaph and the field of Honour at Tofield Cemetery. We also have the Legion Memorial Garden beside the Golden Club.”
Speaking to the history of the Tofield branch, Ferguson said that Branch 91 was granted their Charter on April 22, 1930. There were originally 15 Charter members, with an additional 30 signing up during the organizational meeting. The branch was active until the imminent threat of WWII. . . . contd.
